DERBY'S HOME! Paint Horse Show Review

Derby is home and saying hello to Teya and Romeo!
She is pretty excited here just off the trailer but we'll have her in quarantine so she won't get to play with the rest of the herd for awhile. We always do this when our horses come back in from another barn or show.
Jon Kern, our trainer from Nickel Creek Stables, riding Derby in the Jr. Western Pleasure class. She has only had 60 days put on her so it is really great that she's this quiet already at a show. How many horses can you say that about? Her head set is not there yet. We did not participate to win or even place....notice no fake tail and did not worry about headset...this was merely to get her out and about to see how she would act. We felt she did wonderful for being so young and inexperienced. It's not all about winning, with us anyway.....it's about training your horse well and we believe she held her own here due to all our ground work and Jon's training abilities to take her to the next level!

Tony and Dan watching Jon and Derby come down on the rail.
I fell in love with this mare when I visited her as a little seven month old filly and purchased her...liked her markings then and love them even more now as she's grown....but I'll admit there was something special about her, so sensitive, responsive and kind. Am I braggin....you bet I am and you would be too if you were a novice that has heard all the negative comments on her and had all the challenges that come with being a horse owner......
I am blessed indeed.
Warm up

Poured down rain early morning so the arena was a mess!

Warm up pen a mess as well but Derby didn't really mind it too much....she did really well despite all the water and mud. We don't usually do Western Pleasure Shows but since there are not that many local shows and we have time constraints due to our other horses here, we wanted her to see some sights and get used to going places. Jon, thanks for a job well done and a fun weekend!

Luanne, I don't know that much about horses, but she is beautiful. I agree with Andrea, the Lord really does know how to paint his beautiful creatures. Hugs, Marty

I have said this so many times now but Derby is gorgeous, I LOVE her! And clearly she has a great brain and an amazing temperament, lucky you to have the whole package!

Thanks so much everyone for your comments. Funny, two-four years ago no one liked the black & white tobiano at all and called them junk that people just bred for color only! I saw several at the show!! I kept her mane so I can make a hat band...it'll grow out! LOL! She had rubbed it off bare in a spot all in one day while trying to get grass on the other side of the fence while at the trainer so we decided to cut it. She's settling in nicely now but she sure wants to be by her stall mate, Old Glory! You tell me that they don't miss one another when gone!

She looks so good, and calm, for her first show experience! A lot of potential there! :) Will you do the fake tail if you continue to show her in western pleasure?
I'm glad everything is working out with Derby. She did look pretty excited to see her pasture buddies, too!

Nope, no tail extensions for us PG! We will NOT conform!

She is beautiful Luanne. She looks so calm and collected, very impressive for her first show. They do extensions for horses tails??? Man, I thought I'd seen everything when I was showing dogs, but apparently not lol. Have a great week. Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Yes, tail extensions are quite common in the Quarter Horse and Paint Horse circuits along with banded short manes. We will be showing Ranch Horse(no tail extensions allowed in this circuit)they want to see the horse as natural as possible, even showing in regular working tack (no silver)and no fancy show clothes either! More our speed.

I like her mane that way and Tail extensions...hum..maybe I should look into horses for my next avenue of hair design!!
